The chair has deliberate contradiction in that it appears soft, wet and heavy yet its lightweight with a hard surface. It visually references a range of sources from military like jackets through to industrial ducting and even reptilian forms.

Anatropic materials (strenghts in certain directions) like composites, are ripe for exploring skiful construction as they require empirical knowledge gained through experimention and by the nature of the materials, allow finishes and shapes that are not possible through the usual mass production methods using isotropic materials (uniform strength in every direction) like plastics and metals.

House of Furniture Parts

May 11, 2009

Architecture, furniture and storage all in one. Studio Makkink & Bey took standard sheets of ply and with CNC cutting, created a miniature house to stand within larger interiors of offices, studios and lofts. With walls of stool, bench and table parts that easily come out and assemble, the functionability and character of the house can be changed as more or less furniture is used. A poetic vision for efficient production and material use, House of furniture parts transports flat and can be made to suit different functions, produced locally and customized.
